This direction applies the Lab's nanomaterials synthesis expertise to environmental protection and green chemistry. A major thread involves metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) — including Cu-, Co-, and Fe-based porphyrinic MOFs, Zr-based UiO-66, ZIF-8/ZIF-67, and IRMOF-3 — engineered for low-temperature gas sensing (CO, H₂S, ethanol), electrocatalysis (hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, Li-ion battery electrodes), and as scaffolds for composite functional materials. A second thread focuses on photocatalytic and adsorption-based water treatment, using ZnO- and TiO₂-based nanocomposites (Montmorillonite/ZnO, Montmorillonite/TiO₂, GCN/bimetallic-MOF Z-scheme heterojunctions) to degrade organic dyes such as Rhodamine B and Reactive Red 195, and biomass-derived porous carbon (from shrimp-shell waste) for simultaneous removal of dyes and heavy metals. The group additionally explores biomass valorization catalysis, such as carbon-embedded Ru nanoparticle catalysts converting levulinic acid into γ-valerolactone, reflecting a broader interest in sustainable, resource-efficient nanomaterials for environmental and energy applications.
